The historical tour itinerary

DAY ITINERARY:DJERBA-AIN CHARCHARA-TATAOUINE

  • The historical tour starts with an early departure from your selected hotel in Djerba via the Roman road towards Tataouine and Dhahar massif with a panoramic stop to admire the Salt Lake “Sobkhet El Meleh”.
  • Drive to the Smar region and the fabulous lunar landscape at Ain Charchara called the surface of the moon.
  • Arrive at Tataouine and visit the Science Village which houses a Jurassic Park testifying to the prehistoric richness of the Dhahar region since the tertiary era and the presence of rich deposits of vertebrate fossils such as sharks, bony fishes, turtles, crocodiles, and dinosaurs.
  • Visit Tatouine city, the famous city that housed the battalion of the foreign legion, and the famous “Bat d’AF”.
  • A brief city tour in the local market with typical products such as slippers made of camel leather and Burnous (traditional coat made of lambswool or camel hair with hood).

DAY ITINERARY:CHENINI-GHOMRASSEN-KSAR HADADA-DJERBA

  • The historical tour continues to Chenini, the only crest village populated by a Berber community of about five hundred inhabitants.
  • It is known for its troglodyte houses and Ksars, this beautiful village is set on the top of a mountain which has a magnificent view of the Dhahar plateau.
  • A wander tour in Chenini till the Ksar and the small white mosque.
  • Then, you’ll enjoy a delicious typical lunch to savor the delights of the ancestral Berber culinary art.
  • After lunch, Drive to Ghomrassen crossing the Dhahar massif through the Oued El Khil canyon.
  • Almost 140 million years ago, when the Tethys Ocean retreated to form the Mediterranean Sea, the geological layers uplifted forming the mountains of present-day Dhahar.
  • Following the collapse, a large cliff was formed with a succession of escarpments that now form the flanks of the Dhahar Massif and the oldest geological layers appeared.
  • There is a clearly visible alternation of hard rocks and soft rocks, which has certainly allowed the Berbers of the region to dig troglodyte habitats, and even find an infinity of fossils inside them.
  • Arrival at Ghomrassen, a village nestled in a rocky valley with beautiful pierced cliffs in an old village standing on a rocky peak marked by the marabout Sidi Arfa overlooking a breath-taking landscape.
  • Visit the ancient caves located in Ain Sefri which still contain beautiful rock paintings some of which are still visible.
  • Visit Ksar Hadada, a former Berber granary for Berber tribes with its Ghorfas superimposed cells used to store aliments. It is the set location of the Star Wars movie.
  • Drive back to Djerba and drop if in your selected hotel.
